Townsville Airport up in the air

Townsville Airport has facilitated its busiest August on record for passenger movements, welcoming in excess of 150,700 passengers.

When compared to the year prior, Townsville Airport recorded a 10.4 per cent increase in passenger numbers, equating to more than 14,000 additional passengers.

Chief Operating Officer Kevin Gill said the airport’s record August could be attributed to continued demand from the airport’s airline partners.

“We had strong performance in the domestic market throughout the month, with both Jetstar and Tigerair performing particularly well,” said Mr Gill.

“It’s pleasing to note the majority of domestic passengers with Tigerair are inbound visitors, which is having a positive impact on the local economy. It is expected this growth will have a positive flow on effect for local tourism providers.

“As a major economic enabler for North Queensland, we are focused on driving growth and connectivity into and out of Townsville.

“International services continue to perform consistently. The Bali service in particular has produced encouraging passenger numbers.

“It is great to see such strong growth, but this does of course put more pressure on terminal capacity. As such, it is increasingly important to proceed with our airport investment program to facilitate our growing passenger numbers.”

Townsville Airport recorded its busiest month ever in July 2017, and in August recorded its third consecutive month of growth.

Townsville Airport is owned and operated by regional airport specialist Queensland Airports Limited, owner of Gold Coast, Mount Isa and Longreach airports.
